Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of income inequality on child maltreatment focusing on the relationship with community poverty levels. For this, it yielded Gini coefficients of both metropolitan and local governments using data collected through Korean Labor & Income Panel Study from 2015 to 2017 and merged them with child maltreatment reports statistics. The main findings are as follows. First, the local governments with higher metropolitan income inequality showed higher levels of child maltreatment reports. Second, there was no interactive effect between income inequality and community poverty levels. Third, in terms of 67 local governments with the total population over 200,000, the local governments with low income inequality and high poverty showed the highest levels of child maltreatment reports. Based on these findings, it suggests measures to lower income inequality of metropolitan governments and future research directions.
