Abstract

This article begins with the fact that all contents are being sensitized due to the digital technology in the 21st century. This tries to examine the cultural history of image and sound, the two most important resources of cultural contents. The Western visualism which is seeing is knowing primarily has its roots in the Western metaphysical tradition. Due to the Western metaphysical tradition, image and sound has been separated, however, this article emphasizes that image and sound have not walked the path of separatism, but have always inter-related. Also, it plans to set a foundation for cultural contents design by clarifying the cultural phenomenon of image and sound mutually intersecting, other than centralizing only on sound or image. In the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the phase of visual art and sound art changes drastically in Europe. With image and sound facing a new conversion in the reciprocally supplementing relationship, sound becomes visualized and image becomes sound and vice versa. The interrelation between image and sound represents the phenomenon of genres mixing and the intermedia in art history. Such a phenomenon is closely related to image and sound each trying to overcome the barrier of expression in order to supplement each other to fulfill the desires of a multi-sensual expression. In the age of digital media, the merging phenomenon of image and sound is being further activated. With such combinations of data, image and sound become infinitely transformable. The sound and image that become data are drastically changing art production and the formula of design. It is creating a new creative concept through the combination of data and network, and intends to unify the sense of the multimedia age. In this aspect, this article indicates the issues of an image-centered culture, and emphasizes the importance of the newly rising sound culture.
