Abstract

In this paper, we conducted a remote pointing evaluation experiment using Fitz's law to help design interfaces in virtual reality. The experiment examined the correlation between user behavior, speed and accuracy, based on Fitts' Law and Mackenzie's formula. While the experimental design of the previous study directly selected the target, this study experimented with the speed relationship according to user behavior and changed the target to five levels when selecting distant objects through laser beams from virtual reality controllers. First, as a result of the experiment, the selection failure rate was derived according to the size of the target when pointing to the remote in virtual reality. Second, additional cognitive time required to focus on small targets was defined as the Select Confirmation Time (SCT), and the suitable target size was derived for virtual reality. Third, we examined validity of this experimental data by comparing the results of the previous study with the results of this experiment. Through the results of this paper, we hope that experiments with basic design principles to understand the user's cognitive system and behavior in virtual reality will help the user create and design an efficient user interface.
