Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of curved path gait training and general gait training on the lower extremity muscle activity and gait ability for stroke patients. Method: Twenty-Seven with stroke were randomly assigned in two groups. Experiment group(n=13) performed the curved path stride gait training. Control group(n=14) performed the general gait training. In the Experiment group, the curved path stride gait training was performed 30 minutes 5 times a week for 8 weeks. Control group also performed general straight time gait training 30 minutes 5 times a week for 8 weeks. Surface EMG was used to measure the changes in lower limb muscle activity. The gaiting ability was assessed by Dynamic Gait Index(DGI), Time Up and Go Test(TUG), 10m walking test, Figure of 8 walk Test(F8WT). Results: First, both the experimental group and the control group improved in the leg muscle activity test after the gait training. The experimental group showed significant improvement in the pre-and post-training change comparing with control groups(p<.05). Second, there was significant improvement in Dynamic Gait Index, Time Up and Go Test, 10m walking test in the gait ability test after the gait training in both the experimental group and the control group(p<.05). However, there was no statistically significant improvement in the control group with the Figure of 8 walk Test(p>.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the curved path stride gait training was effective for the activation of the leg muscle and improvement of the gaiting of the stroke patients.
