Abstract
The purpose of this study was to classify the skill formation among production workers using the Latent Class Analysis (LCA) method and to identify and compare the factors influencing each type. The analysis was based on data from the second wave of the Human Capital Corporate Panel (HCCP), targeting 2,421 regular production workers who had been employed for more than one year. The main findings are as follow: First, Types of skill formation among production workers can be classified based on initial and current skill levels, length of service, and the direction of skill development. The identified types include low-skilled stagnant, single-skill maintenance, multi-skill maintenance, short-term skill improvement, long-term skill expansion, integrated development, and technically multi-skilled. Second, In general, more than seven out of ten production workers experience improvement in either the level or the scope of their skills after joining a company. Among these, the type focusing on skill enhancement is the most common, followed by scope-expansion types and integrated development types. In contrast, types requiring technically complex multi-skills are relatively less common. Third, Skill formation among production workers does not follow a single path but rather occurs through diverse types. Moreover, the factors influencing each type differ. Human capital, learning experiences, organizational culture, and employment characteristics all influence the improvement or expansion of skills, but they do so in different ways depending on the type.
