초록
The concept of “image” can refer to both physical or visual images and the conscious and subconscious drives and social factors that produce them. As an assemblage of these social activities, a film reflects the social and architectural backgrounds and interests of the general public alongside the film director’s messages. This study analyzed the images of apartment spaces as represented in 10 artistically and publicly renowned 1960s Korean films. In these films, apartment spaces were transformed or newly created, depending on the director’s intention. The apartment space images were represented as: (1) positive spaces of modern and Western lifestyles that emphasized affluence, convenience, and neatness; (2) contrasting images of poor-quality, lower-income family homes; and (3) “unstable modern women’s” homes that emerged from an unpredictable post-war society and rapid modernization. By analyzing how the Korean public perceived these apartment space images, this study facilitates an understanding of life in the early days of Korean apartment housing, and how the spaces and human activities within them are represented in film.
