Abstract
With the development of technology, this study aims to compare the differences in children's immersive experiences under diverse reading formats and to explore the changes in immersion after the addition of AR to flat picture books and pop-up picture books. The experimental subjects were 84 Chinese primary school students aged 8 to 12 years old, randomly assigned to a control group (flat books, N=42) and an experimental group (pop-up books, N=42). Both groups read picture books with the same content but in different reading formats. The experiment was divided into two stages: a pre-investigation measuring the immersive experience of the two forms of paper books and a post-investigation measuring the immersive experience of the two books after using AR technology. The results of the experiment showed that adding AR to regular picture books resulted in a significant increase in immersion, but adding AR to pop-up books did not produce a significant effect. In addition, there is no significant difference in the engagement experience between "AR picture books" and "pop-up picture books" and "AR pop-up picture books". That is, pop-up picture books and paper AR picture books can provide the same level of immersive reading experience. The findings of this research provide valuable insights for improving children's reading services.
