Abstract

CHIN DAN was a Chinese weekly which was started on October 10, 1920 in Shanghai by Shin Gyu-sik, an independence leader of Korea. As a Korean magazine which was released in China for a long time, CHIN DAN was not only valued by Korean people, but also attracted the attention of Chinese society at that time. This paper will study the Pre-modern cultural exchange between China and Korea through CHIN DAN. CHIN DAN’s founder, Shin Gyu-sik, had attached importance to magazines before he exiled in China. He had the experience of running a magazine and spoke highly of the role magazines played. Based on this cognition, he not only associated with political personages in the early days of exile in China, but also actively involved in the Chinese magazine circles, and formed a close contact with figures working for Chinese magazines, which laid the foundation for Korea to set up revolutionary magazines in China. With such basic preconditions, together with the financial support from the Chinese revolutionaries and the inscriptions, congratulations of celebrities and groups in China, CHIN DAN started its publication successfully. CHIN DAN published many Chinese articles, which exposed and criticized Japan’s brutal rule over Korea, and showed the sympathy and support for the Korean independence movement. The writers also discussed many international issues and Chinese issues in their articles. At the same time, through CHIN DAN, the Koreans introduced their history and culture to China, expressed their praise for the Sun Yat-sen’s revolution, criticized the Beiyang government, and paid attention to the new trend of thought in China, etc. In brief, CHIN DAN provided the space and field for political and cultural exchanges between China and Korea, which played an important role in the establishment of the revolutionary cooperation between China and Korea when Korea was colonized by Japan. It can be said that CHIN DAN played a key role in initiating a new form of exchanges between China and Korea in the early twentieth Century.
