이 글은 채만식의 소설에 나타나는 남편과 아내의 관계를 통해, 어떻게 남성 주체가 여성타자를 인식하고, 탈근대적 주체로 구성되어나가는 지를 살펴보고자 했다. 남성 주체와 여성 타자의 관계에 주목할 때, 보편적이고 성숙한 남성이 경험하는 식민지로서의 근대적 현실이 아니라, 서로 갈등하는, 다양한 반응이 존재하는 담론의 장으로서 현실의 의미는 재구성될 수 있기 때문이다. 우선, 억압된 식민지적 남성 주체는 여성 타자의 이질성을 배제시키고, 자신의 영역으로 동일화시킴으로써, 아내는 남편에게 완전히 종속되는 양상이 드러난다. 또 여성 타자는 '아버자- 남편 아들' 이라는 남성적 질서 체계에 순응하고, 자신의 개별성을 스스로 제거하기도 한다. 그러나 남편-아내의 관계에서, 여전히 남편의 영역에 아내가 포섭되어 있지만, 미약하나마 타자의 이질성이 드러나는 경우, 그것은 억압된 주체의 저항을 유발시키는 계기가 되었다. 작품내에서 아내가 제한적이나마 자신의 생각을 드러낸다든지, 남편과 다른 구체적인고 현실적인태도를 드러냄으로써 타자의 이질성을 발현하는 것이다. 여성타자가 자신의 이질성을 발현하고, 남성 주체가 그 타자와의 거리감을 인식할 때, 비로소 주체와 타자는 근대적 동일성의 지반을 벗어날 가능성을 확보하게 된다. 비록 그 가능성이 즉흥적이고 감상적인 수준에서 주어지거나, 여전히 계몽적이고 우월한 주체의 위치에 의해 굴곡을 겪게 된다할 지라도, '차이' 에 대한 인식은 변화로의 길을 열어주는 것이기에 그 의의가있다.
Abstract
This article aims to investigate how the male subject recognizes the female other and how he is constructed as a deconstructive subject through the marital relationship in Chai Mansik's novel. Focused on the relationship between male subject and female other, the meaning of reality could be reconstructed not as a modern reality of a colony experienced by an ordinary male adult, but as a discursive field of more complicated mutual conflicts and diverse responses. First of all, the oppressed colonial male subject excludes heterogeneity of female otherness and identifies his wife with himself and subjugate her completely. Also, the female subject Complies with the male dominating order, so called father-husband-son system and eliminates her own singularity. However feeble heterogeneity of the other is, it triggers the oppressed female subject's resistance if the wife is included in her husband's scope on the whole. This heterogeneity of the other is manifested in part when the wife expresses her own idea or reveals her concrete and pragmatic attitude different from her husband. The subject and the other cannot have the possibility to escape from the modern homogeneity until the female subject manifests her own heterogeneity and the male subject recognizes the distance between the couple. Even though the possibility is given in impromptu and sensational level or still largely winds along the enlightened and superior male subject position, the recognition of the 'difference' is meaningful in itself as it opens the way to change.
