Backchannels in Korean Daily Conversations: Differences by Gender, Age, and Interpersonal Relationships

Abstract
This paper aims to examine backchannel patterns by gender, age, and interpersonal relationships through an analysis of Korean conversations. Results showed that men tended to use listener response expressions more often in conversations than women. Regarding age, the types of backchannels used by people in their 20s and 30s were more diverse than those used by people in their teens, 40s, 50s, 60s and older. The examination of listener response expression patterns according to interpersonal relationships revealed that cooperative and uncooperative backchannels were used significantly more among friends than in other groups. This study is significant because it focused on the number of backchannels used, as opposed to previous research, which examined their frequency.
