스페인 화가 호안 미로(Joan Miró)는 쓰기와 그리기의 절묘한 결합으로 회화의 차원을 바꾸려고 했다. 그는 시에서 영감을 얻은 언어적 기호를 통해 사물을 묘사하는 관습적 방식을 깨트리면서 중요한 양식적 변환을 성취한다. 그는 그림에 글 상자를 삽입하듯이 텍스트, 단어, 활자, 숫자를 써넣는다. 종종 글자를 뒤섞어 배열하거나, 압운(押韻), 의성어 효과, 동음이의어 및 다의어와 같은 언어적 장치를 통해 회화의 성격을 청각적이고 촉각적으로 변환하여 연상을 즉시 고취하거나 회화에 반전과 상상력을 부여하는 요소로써 언어를 활용한다. 본 논문은 널리 통용되는 미로의 ‘시적 회화’라는 비평적 성격을 확장하는 동시에 구체화하여 미로 회화를 글자의 쓰기, 즉 ‘에크리튀르(écriture)’라는 측면에서 분석한다. 에크리튀르는 미로의 회화 형식을 적확하게 함축하는 용어이다. 미로는 문자와 소리의 효과로써 그의 사실적이고 재현적인 회화 양식을 해체하고 환상적인 선의 추상적인 형태로 나아갈 수 있었다. 이미지와 글자의 자유로운 연결과 상승작용을 통해 미로는 현실 세계를 초월하면서도 공감각을 자극하며 몰입을 유도한다. 그리하여 그는 초현실주의적 흐름마저 극복하면서 예측 불가하며 신비로운 회화세계에 도달한다. 본 본문은 미로의 회화작품에서 언어가 이미지로 치환되는 과정과 조건을 분석한다. 나아가 문자와 숫자, 음향과 서체가 어떻게 사물 이미지와 연결되고 작품의 주제를 이루는지 구체적으로 논증할 것이다. 그리하여 언어적 상상과 활자 이미지는 미로의 시적이고 추상적인 작품세계를 구성하는 본질적 요소임을 규명한다.
Abstract
Joan Miró attempted to change the dimension of painting through the exquisite combination of writing and drawing. Inspired by poetry, Miró tested to break the conventional method of describing objects through linguistic symbols, and achieved a decisive stylistic transformation by practicing the combination of literal elements and images. He inserted text, words, letters, and numbers as if inserting text boxes into his paintings. He often arranged letters in a mixed manner, or used language as an element that transformed the nature of the painting into an auditory and tactile form by using linguistic devices such as rhyme, onomatopoeia, homonyms, and polysemy, immediately inspiring associations or giving the painting a sense of reversal and imagination. This paper expands and concretizes the widely used critical nature of Miro’s ‘poetic painting’, analyzing Miro’s painting in terms of writing, or ‘écriture’. Écriture is a term that accurately encapsulates Miro’s painting style. Miro was able to dismantle his realistic and representational painting style through the effects of letters and sounds and moves on to an abstract form of fantastic lines. With the free connection and synergy of images and letters, Miro transcends the real world while stimulating synesthesia and inducing immersion. In this way, he overcomes even the surrealist trend and reaches an unpredictable and mysterious painting world. This study analyzes the process and conditions in which language is replaced by images in Miro’s paintings. Furthermore, it will specifically argue how letters, numbers, sounds, and fonts are connected to the images of objects and form the theme of the work. Thus, it will be clarified that letters are an important formative element that constitutes Miro’s poetic and abstract world of works.
