Abstract
This paper investigated transmission aspects and characteristics of play in Jeonnam district. They could be classified into three kinds, i.e. seasonal play, usual play, ritual play. As the result of investigation, 184 items were found. The seasonal play account for 47 percent, usual play 33 percent, ritual play 20 percent of all items. This shows that the plays in Jeonnam district were created and transmitted in the close relation with the change of season. The characteristics of play in Jeonnam district could be summed up the spirit of coexistence, i.e. coexistence of nature and human-being, coexistence of work, rite and play, coexistence of utility and art, coexistence of men and women, coexistence of struggle and compromise. The spirit of coexistence in play have made the traditional society as the space of peace and harmony. The ideal and the purpose of studying the traditional plays is to succeed them in the present life and arts. In order of that, we should investigate the transmission aspects of play more precisely and search the methods for recreating them as the contemporary performing arts.
