본고는 그동안 학계에서 구체적으로 논의된 바 없는 1910년대 전통공연물 흥행 단체인 ‘일행’에 주목하여, 일행의 등장 및 활성화 배경‧전개 양상‧흥행 특징 등을 살펴본 연구이다. 전통공연물 일행의 등장 및 활성화에는 전통공연물의 생산과 소비 지속, 신파극 일행의 흥행 성공, 초기 전통공연물 일행의 흥행 호조 등이 배경으로 자리하고 있었다. 전통공연물 일행은 1912년부터 1919년까지 결성과 활동이 전개되었는데, 일행의 종류‧일행의 결성 주체‧일행의 명칭‧일행의 흥행 장소 등에서 1910년대 초반과 1910년대 중반 이후가 차이를 보였다. 전통공연물 일행의 흥행 특징으로는 흥행 종목과 출연진의 다양화 추구, 일행 간의 연합 흥행 시도 등이 있었다. 1910년대 전통공연물 일행은 전통공연물의 생산과 소비를 이끌고, 전통공연예술인의 활동 확대와 전통공연예술의 보급에 의의가 있는 만큼, 전통공연물 일행과 같은 일제강점기 전통공연물 흥행 단체를 규명하는 작업은부단히 지속되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This study focuses on 'Ilhaeng' which was a popular traditional theatric group in the 1910s, which has not been discussed in detail among academic circles, and examines characteristics of its appearance, vitalization, box office hits, and so forth. The background of the appearance and vitalization of Ilhaeng as a traditional theatric group involved the continued production and consumption of traditional theatric works, the success of Ilhaeng with its soap opera, its high-rise with traditional theatric works, etc. Ilhaeng continued its activity of traditional theatric performance up to 1919 since its foundation in 1912, and there was difference between the early 1910s and the mid 1910s regarding its performance type, main agent of organization, title, and places of box office hits. Characteristics of Ilhaeng's popular traditional theatric works were related to the items of box office hits, pursuit of variation in castmates, unified projects of Ilhaeng, etc. In the 1910s, Ilhaeng took the lead of production and consumption of traditional theatric works and contributed to promoting the distribution of traditional performing arts as well as the expansion of traditional performance artist activities. Therefore, it is necessary to continue the study on clarifying groups that presented popular traditional theatric works such as Ilhaeng during the period of Japanese colonial rule.
