개종 이후 T. S. 엘리엇은 문학 평가에 있어 엄격한 도덕적이고 종교적인 면을 강조한다. 『낯선 신을 찾아서: 현대 이단의 입문서』에서 엘리엇은 도덕가로서 ‘전통,’ ‘정통,’ ‘이단’ 그리고 ‘모독’이란 비평의 개념을 전개시키면서 현대 문학의 효용성을 평가한다. 토마스 하디는 불가지론자, 무신론자로서 여러 시를 통해 하나님을 부정하고 구원을 거부하고 예수님의 존재의 의미를 이해하지 못하는 내용을 표현한다. 엘리엇은 전통적인 종교적 신앙인 기독교 정통에서 벗어나 자신만의 개성을 강조하고, 자유주의적 윤리나 종교, 퇴폐적인 감상주의, 기괴함 그리고 악마적인 요소를 시에 드러내며 자신만의 ‘낯선 신’이나 신화를 찾는 하디를 『낯선 신을 찾아서』에서 ‘이단’으로 공격한다. 본고에서는 하디의 시를 통해 “믿음의 징조”인 ‘모독’과는 다른 특징을 가진 그의 이단성을 살펴본다.
Abstract
After conversion, T. S. Eliot as a moralist emphasizes strict moral and religious criticism to evaluate the use of literary works. Eliot criticizes modern writers and works discussing the concepts of ‘tradition,’ ‘orthodoxy,’ ‘heresy’ and ‘blasphemy’ as standards of criticism in his After Strange Gods: A Primer of Modern Heresy. As an agnostic atheist Thomas Hardy tries to expose eccentricity, extreme personality, emotional decadence and to intrude the diabolic in his poetry for inventing his own ‘strange god’ or myth free from ‘traditional religious beliefs’ and Christian ‘orthodoxy.’ Eliot attacks Hardy as modern ‘heresy’ or as an example of the heretic in After Strange Gods. This essay examines ‘heresy’ of Hardy in his poetry, which is distinguishable from ‘blasphemy,’ “a sign of faith.”
