본 논문은 T. S. 엘리엇의 초기 산문에 나타난 윤리관을 아리스토텔레스, 브래들리, 불교 철학자들에게 보인 그의 관심과 연결하여 논의한다. 이러한 연구는 “윤리” 혹은 “윤리적”이라는 개념을 새롭게 고찰하려는 시대의 흐름에 부응하는 것이면서, 동시에 엘리엇에 대한 전형적인 비평과 달리 그를 좀 더 균형 잡힌 시각으로 재조명해 보려는 시도이다. 즉 엘리엇을 보수적인 엘리트 시인, 편협한 사회비평가 등으로 간주하는 비판적 시각이 있다면, 본고에서는 엘리엇의 산문 중 주목을 덜 받은 글을 발굴하여 그의 윤리관을 논의하면서, 오히려 겸손한 태도, 구체적 일상에 유용한 지혜, 극단에서 벗어난 중용의 방식 등을 그의 윤리적 관점의 핵심으로 부각시킨다. 엘리엇은 브래들리의 “겸손,” 아리스토텔레스의 “실천적 지혜,” 불교 철학자의 “중도”의 방식을 높이 평가하면서, 자신의 윤리적 관점을 상대적인 진리와, 우리의 구체적이고 복잡하고 다양하며 변화하는 현실에 열려있는 것으로 제시한다. 미발표 원고를 포함한 초기 산문에서 엘리엇은 무조건적이고 절대적인 진리, 도덕적․기계적인 법칙과는 분명 다른 상대주의적 윤리관을 표명한다.
Abstract
This study explores T. S. Eliot’s ethical views in his early works, in drawing some ethical implications from his respect towards Aristotle, Bradley, and Buddhist scholars. In his critical reviews on Aristotle, Bradley, and Eastern philosophy, especially Buddhism, Eliot presents his own ethical views. Eliot praised Aristotle as “the perfect critic,” since he could apply his intelligence, his idea of practical wisdom to everyday human life. Along with Aristotelian wisdom, Bradley’s modesty and the Buddhist Middle Way fascinated Eliot. Thus, rather than moral and mechanical set of rules, Eliot propounds relativistic ethics, which can deal with our complex and contingent experience, and help us perform right actions and feelings in facing any particular situation. This study includes an analysis of Eliot’s unpublished material, especially his papers and notebooks from 1911 to 1915 in order to ascertain his ethical position, especially in his early stage.
