Abstract

Byeongja-ilgi is a diary written by Nampyeong Jo, a woman in the Joseon Dynasty. This diary was recorded from December 1636 to August 1640. This diary begins at the same time as the outbreak of Byeongja-Horan. This war ended in 1637, but this diary has been written for over three years since then. Readers are more likely to read the Byeongja-ilgi while anticipating an indirect experience with the historical event called “Byeongja Horan”. However, while reading this diary, the reader concentrates on the narrative of the author's experiences and suffering. I think that the reader can read this because the Byeongja-ilgi describes social and personal deficiencies in different time patterns. The reading time devoted to the lack of Byeongja-ilgi transforms the reader to read the Byeongja-ilgi as a narrative rather than a record, and makes them share the author's personal experiences. The concept of time that can be used as a criterion for interpretation of Byeongja-ilgi can vary depending on the way the reader makes the text meaning. If the readers of the Byeongja-ilgi understand the text narratively, the time of the text will be cut as a narrative time. In other words, the reader analyzes the time of the text according to the interpretive mechanism of the text, not the genre of the text. If the mechanism that works for the reader's text recognition is a narrative cognitive function, the reader restructures the time of the text based on the narrative time. Therefore, in this study, when the reader wants to read the Byeongja-ilgi as a narrative text, how the time of the text is reorganized was examined. Therefore, this study examines how the time of the text is reorganized when the reader wants to read the Byeongja-ilgi as a narrative text. Furthermore, by reconstructing the Byeongja-ilgi through narrative time, it attempted to explore the reader's cognitive system that embodies narrative in non-narrative texts.
