Abstract

Pilgi (筆記) is a distinctive literary genre in late fifteenth- to early seventeenth-century Korea, occupying the threshold between fact and narrative imagination. While outwardly a record of scholarly observations, it mediated between factual documentation and fictive constructs, thereby producing fictional narrative worlds. Its essence lies not in preserving a neutral record but in showing how facts are reframed by acts of storytelling. The 1589 Jeong Yeo-rip (鄭汝立) incident (Gichukoksa, 己丑獄事) illustrates this dynamic. Competing accounts by the eastern (東人) and western (西人) factions, partisan distortions within the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄), and reinterpretations shaped by the Imjin War (壬辰倭亂) reveal that “facts” emerge only through contested narratives. Figures such as Jeong Pal-ryong (鄭八龍) and Gil Sambong (吉三峰) were simultaneously historical actors and fictive symbols of dynastic overthrow, demonstrating the ontological instability of recorded reality. An Bang-jun’s (安邦俊) Gichukgisa shows how narrative operates on two levels: Jeong Yeo-rip spreads prophetic tales that present Gil Sambong as a divine king-to-be. Here, utterance functions both as factual testimony and as fictional narration generating revolutionary meaning. Likewise, the prophecy “Mokja-mang jeon-eup-heung” (木子亡 奠邑興) acquired political force not because of its truth but because its repetition reconstituted social ontology. Language, inherently incomplete, enabled such shifts: gaps were filled by interpreters, and stories multiplied as listeners became speakers. Thus pilgi reveals that the line between fact and fictional invention is porous, and that fictive constructs can attain ontological weight once narrated. In conclusion, pilgi constitutes a genre where historical record and imaginative narration converge. By intertwining the factual with the fictive and fictional, it discloses how narrative itself shapes political reality, exposing the fractures of early Joseon society and redefining the relationship between fact, ontology, and fiction.
