본고는 『열하일기(熱河日記)』에 나타난 마두(馬頭)의 형상화 양상을 분석하여 마두를 새로운 시선에서 이해하려는 작가 의식을 살피고 마두의 형상화 방식이 지닌 의미를 생각해 본 것이다. 마두는 연행 노정에서 크고 작은 업무를 도맡은 중요한 존재였지만 갖가지 말썽과 시비를 일으킨 탓에 골칫거리로 인식되었다. 연암은 이러한 사실을 잘 알면서도 마두가 처한 현실과 불가피한 속사정을 이해의 시선으로 바라보았다. 그리하여 마두를 비판적으로, 때로는 연민의 시선으로, 때로는 희화화하여 마두에 대한 새로운 이해에 도달하고자 하였다. 마두를 바라보는 연암의 기본 인식을 바탕으로 『열하일기』에 나타난 마두의 형상화 양상을 셋으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 연암은 마두를 사행(使行)의 어려움을 해결해 주는 현지 전문가이자 주인의 곤란한 상황들을 앞장서서 해결해 주는 충실한 보좌관으로 형상화했다. 나아가 연암은 마두의 어리숙한 이미지를 이용해 현실을 풍자하는 도구로 활용하였다. 이를 토대로 연암의 마두 형상화가 지닌 의미를 살펴보았다. 마두를 인격적 주체로 형상화한 연암의 의식에는 인간을 차별하지 않으려는 평등 의식이 담겨 있다. 나아가 마두를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 사건을 극적으로 배치하는 방식은 『열하일기』의 소설적 형상화에 기여하고 하층민에 대한 문학적 재현의 지평을 넓혀준다. 또한 마두의 어리숙한 이미지를 활용한 문체는 전통적인 한문 산문의 엄숙함에서 벗어나 문학적 즐거움과 현실 비판의 기능을 동시에 담아낸다. 마두를 형상화한 연암의 의식을 통해 낮은 존재를 향한 연암의 따뜻한 인간애와 더불어 『열하일기』의 풍부한 형상성과 문학적 가치를 다시금 확인하였다.
Abstract
This study examines the representation of horsekeepers (馬頭) in 『Yeolha ilgi』(熱河日記, Journal of the Heat River), analyzing the author’s consciousness in depicting these figures from a novel perspective and exploring the Added for specificity significance of their portrayal. Additionally, his stylistic approach, which leverages the horsekeepers' perceived simplicity, marks a departure from the solemnity of traditional Chinese prose, achieving both literary entertainment and social commentary. By analyzing Yeonam’s deliberate representation of horsekeepers, this study highlights his humanistic compassion for marginalized individuals while reaffirming the literary artistry and significance of 『Yeolha ilgi』.
