강릉색실누비 유물에 관한 소고(小考) -강원도 동양자수박물관 소장품을 중심으로-

본 연구는 첫째, ‘색실누비’라는 용어 사용의 경위를 추적하여 ‘누비’와 달리 ‘색실누비’가 어떤 특징을 가지며 연구되어 왔는지를 파악한다. 둘째, 동양자수박물관이 소장하고 있는 ‘색실누비’를 포함하여 국내에서 산견(散見)되는 색실누비 유물들의 수집, 소장 경로를 파악하여 그 첫 발상지가 ‘강릉’일 수 있다는 점을 밝힌다. 셋째, 사립박물관 소장 44점 유물의 소재, 색상, 형태와 같은 조형적 특징을 기준으로 각각의 유물에게 적절한 명칭을 부여하여 유물에 대한 객관적인 정보를 제공하는 것이다. 연구방법은 문헌 연구, 면접 조사 그리고 유물을 실증적으로 조사하여 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 첫째 ‘색실누비’는 1988년 색누비에서 1990년 색사누비로 그리고 1998년에서 2009년까지 ‘색실누비’라는 용어가 보편적으로 사용되었음을 밝힐 수 있었다. 둘째, 용어의 변천을 추적하다 보면 2010년대에 들어 ‘강릉’이라는 지역성을 획득하게 된 용어로의 변화를 마주하게 된다. 작가를 통해 대중화되어가던 색실누비는 다시 박물관 설립자이자 관장인 수집가의 은근한 열의와 집념의 성과로 진화하였다. 이에 2018년 평창동계올림픽 개최 기념 예술포스터에서 대상을 받은 황수홍 교수의 『겨울 스티치:사랑과 기원』의 주요 모티프는 ‘강릉색실누비’라고 명시하고 있다. 여기서 ‘강릉색실누비’라는 용어가 학계에서 수용 가능한 고유명사로 타당한 것인지 향후 지속적으로 논의하여 전통 섬유소품에 한국적, 지역적 정체성을 부여하는 것을 제안하는 바이다. 셋째, 연구 대상인 44점 유물의 소재, 색상, 형태와 같은 조형적 특징을 토대로 유물마다 적절한 명칭을 부여함으로써 ‘강릉’이라는 지역적 정체성이 들어간 ‘강릉색실누비’라는 독보적 영역을 구축하는데 일조를 할 수 있게 되었다.
Abstract
First, this study tracks down how the term 'SaeksilNubi(color-thread quilt)' has been used in order to determine what characteristics the study of 'SaeksilNubi' has had unlike 'Nubi'. Second, the study reveals that the first birthplace of SaeksilNubi may be Gangneung by finding the route of collecting SaeksilNubi artifacts scattered in Korea, including the 'SaeksilNubi’ owned by the Oriental Museum Embroidery. Third, it provides objective information on the artifacts by giving each object a proper designation based on the sculptural characteristics such as the material, color and shape of the 44 artifacts in the private museum. For the method of research, the study used literature research, interview survey and empirical examination of artifacts, resulting in the following findings: First, the study was able to reveal that the term 'SaeksilNubi' was universally used in 1988∼2009, from SaekNubi in 1988 and SaeksaNubi in 1990. Second, tracking down the change of the term showed that the term gained its locality "Gangneung" in the 2010s. SaeksilNubi, which was popularized through the artist, has evolved again thanks to the subtle enthusiasm and dedication of the collector who is the museum's founder and director. Hwang Soo-hong's 『Winter Stitch: Love and Origin』 which received the grand prize for the art poster commemorating the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics states that its main motif is 'Gangneung SaeksilNubi'. I propose to continuously discuss whether ‘Gangneung SaeksilNubi' is a proper name worthy of recognition in the academic world and to give a Korean and regional identity to the traditional textile artifact. Third, based on the sculptural characteristics such as materials, color, and shape of the 44 artifacts studied, the study was able to help establish a unique domain called 'Gangneung SaeksilNubi', which has a regional identity of 'Gangneung'.
