Abstract
This study presents the process of verifying and reproducing the firefighter uniforms of the Imperial Korean Palace Fire Brigade, established in 1907, to promote the existence and significance of Korea's first modern firefighter uniforms through an exhibition. The study identifies the firefighter uniforms' detailed form, materials, and colors by systematically analyzing relevant laws and diagrams. By comparing Japanese systems, we elucidated the uniqueness of the Korean Empire's fire brigade uniforms, which is Korean ‘소’ and Ihwamun(the imperial seal of Korea). Based on the analyzed data, this study conducted 3D virtual restorations, during which we examined related artifacts and clothing pattern materials to ascertain details such as shape, material, color, size, and manufacturing methods. This study graded the clothing patterns to reflect the sizes of mannequins for exhibition use, facilitating their use in physical reproductions. Through the 3D virtual reconstruction, we reviewed the overall silhouette, fit, sewing methods, and detailed pattern designs of the entire garment before producing the restored pieces. This approach aimed to minimize discrepancies and ensure historical accuracy when reproducing the uniforms with actual materials. These restoration efforts preserve the historical heritage of the Korean Empire's fire brigade and contribute to understanding the social and cultural contexts of the time, thereby providing significant academic value to the fields of Korean firefighting history and garment restoration.
