Abstract

Niinuma, Fumikazu and Myung-Kwan Park. 2004. The Syntax-Phonology Interface: Head Movement (SAI) in Comparatives. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-1, 25-44. This paper examines subject-auxiliary inversion (SAI) in comparative clauses of English and argues that it occurs at Phonetic Form (PF). We show that the SAI in comparatives interacts crucially with sentence stress assignment and VP ellipsis, which are standardly assumed to occur at PF. In particular, the SAI is contingent on the application of VP ellipsis. Futhermore, the SAI is allowed only when it makes the subject of comparative clauses receive unmarked/neutral sentence stress. In the sense that it interacts with PF ellipsis and stress assignment operations, the SAI in comparatives is distinguished from the canonical SAI in question clauses, which is assumed to occur at narrow syntax.
