Abstract

Kim, Jeongah. 2004. A Reanalysis of Korean Partial Reduplication. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-3, 281-305. Based on the several problems of the previous analyses by McCarthy & Prince (1986), Jun (1994) and Davis & Lee (1994, 1996), this paper proposes an alternative analysis of Korean partial reduplication. Korean partial reduplication is divided into two types, prefixation and suffixation, according to the structures of the stems. If the stem includes a heavy syllable, reduplication is applied as a process of prefixation. On the other hand, if the stem consists of light syllables alone or includes a liquid /l/ as its coda, morphological operation applied on the stem would be suffixation. Reduplicated words by prefixation are divided again into two subcategories based on whether the stem includes a velar sound in its heavy syllable as its coda. The two subcategories of partial reduplication by prefixation are closely related by the Minimal Word Constraint and the rhythmic alteration. The alternative analysis shows a systematic relationship among the reduplicated words in Korean and can easily be re-explained through the framework of Correspondence Theory as a few major constraints and their rankings show the adequacy of the analysis.
