Abstract

Jung, Mie Ae. 2007. A Corpus-based Lexical Analysis of English for Business Purposes, Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-4, 751-777. This paper aims to investigate lexical characteristics of English for business by analyzing a specialized corpus collected from authentic texts. Frequencies and ranks of lexical items in the business English corpus were identified and then keywords were abstracted. The technical or semi-technical lexis identified through wordlist and keyword analysis were further examined in terms of concordance, collocations, and semantic relation patterns, which distinguish business English from general English. It reveals that business English shows strong tendencies for lexical relations and patterns. This corpus-based analysis suggests that the corpus work can be integrated in ESP teaching and learning. Knowledge about lexical features and semantic relation patterns through the analysis of specialized corpus can help ESP teachers to understand what items should be included in teaching materials when they design ESP courses and evaluate existing course textbooks or materials for ESP classes. And students will gain more insight into language essential for their better learning and thus be more motivated because those items and semantic relation patterns used in business contexts are closely relevant to current and future professional activities.
