On English Verb Alternations: Ergatives and Middles

Abstract

This study explains the relations between ergative and middle verbs in English, and shows that ergative verbs are a subclass of middle verbs, and finally presents an account for the relations of the two verb classes. This research also provides an answer to the question which verbs participate in ergative formation or middle formation.
