초록
This study investigates L1 Korean learners’ acquisition of English time adverbials in X time and for X time, focusing on two types of predicates: activities and accomplishments. Based on the theoretical claim that, unlike English time adverbials, Korean time adverbials X time maney and X time tongan are not in complementary distribution (Park, 2011), this study experimentally tests the distribution pattern of Korean time adverbials and its influence on L1 Korean learners’ acquisition of English time adverbials. Two acceptability judgment tests were administered to 93 L1 Korean learners of English and 24 L1 English speakers. The results of the first test show that L1 Korean learners accept Korean accomplishment predicates modified by X time maney, and reject activity predicates modified by X time maney. However, they accept both accomplishment and activity predicates modified by X time tongan. The results of the second test show a similar pattern as the first test. L1 Korean learners correctly accept English activity predicates modified by for X time and correctly reject English activity predicates modified by in X time. However, they fail to reject English accomplishment predicates modified by for X time, though they correctly accept English accomplishment predicates modified by in X time. These findings suggest that the distribution of Korean time adverbials is not exactly the same as that of English time adverbials, and this difference can be a source of negative transfer in the acquisition of English time adverbials by L1 Korean learners.
