Abstract

Maehwa[(Ch.) Meihua; Japanese apricot; 梅花] was the most favored object when creating arts and literature on flowers in East Asia and has accordingly been recognized as a representative vehicle of Oriental psyche. In addition, Maehwa was considered as a representation of the 'cultivation of natural growth'[生生之理] when neo-confucianism was combined with an ecological characteristic of Maehwa which blossoms even in hard winter. Therefore, with special favors by confucian scholar-officials, Maehwa became a symbol of seclusion and fidelity which were important virtues of confucian literati. During the 18th century as well, Maehwa poetry continued to be composed especially by poetic coteries. The poetic coteries in those days appreciated Maehwa in pots rather than on the ground in a state of nature and enjoyed making artificial Maehwa with beeswax. Sometimes a potted Maehwa was appreciated under a ice-lamp. According to this relatively artificialness and amusement seeking taste, the poetic members at the "Reception under ice-lamps"[Bingdeung-jobin-yeon;冰燈照賓筵] appreciated Maehwa in light of ice-lamp and the Maehwa Coterie[Mae-Sa;梅社] composed 200 poems about a potted Maehwa at a series of seven meetings. In the case of Yi Deok-mu(李德懋) and his colleagues, the members of poetic coterie wrote a series of poems while enjoying the artificially beeswaxed flower which they named "Reincarnate Maehwa". It can be said that the traditional symbolism of Maehwa vanished in the Maehwa poems of the poetic coteries in the 18th century. Poets in the poetic coteries regarded Maehwa as an aesthetic object of appreciation rather than a symbol of seclusion and fidelity, which could be a sign of declination of the neo-confucian viewpoint. In other words, poetic coteries in the 18th century showed a deep concern at Maehwa just as an aesthetic object without regard to the viewpoint of ‘beauty-virtue affinity' in poems of the previous centuries.
