19세기 후반 조희백의 조운 체험과 그 문예 형상의 특질

이 논문은 1875년 조희백이 남긴 조운 체험의 작품들을 대상으로 그 문예적 형상의 특성을 밝히고자 한 것이다. 본고의 논점은 크게 두 가지이다. 하나는 조희백의 동일한 조운 체험이 장르가 다른 문예 양식들로 형상화되는 과정에서 어떤 차이가 발생하며 각각의 미적 특질은 무엇인가를 살펴보는 것이다. 다른 하나는 조운 체험의 전체과정을 다룬 작품들에서 그 내용적 층위는 어떻게 나눌 수 있으며 그 의미 지향은 무엇인가 하는 점이다. 조희백은 자신의 조운일기 <을해조행록>을 통해 일정별로 빠짐없이 조운의 전 과정에서 일어나 사건들을 객관적이고 치밀하게 기록하였다. 이 일기에 삽입된 한시에서는 특별한 사건과 특이하게 빼어난 경관을 만났을 때, 풍경과 내면이 교융하는 정서의 변화상을 담아내었다. 전체 여정 가운데 강화도까지의 조운 체험을 담아낸 가사 <도해가>는 압축적인 형상과 빠른 리듬을 활용하여 조운 체험의 다기한 형상을 120행의 순국문 가사에 담았다. 조희백의 조운 체험을 담은 작품들은 내용적 측면에서 네 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 첫째는 행정적인 차원에서 조운 업무 전반에 대한 충실하고도 사실적인 기록이다. 둘째는 항해 과정에서 겪었던 위태로움과 내면적 긴장에 관한 내용이다. 셋째는 항해 과정에서 목도한 자연경관의 아름다움과 그에 대한 심미 의식을 형상화하고 있다. 넷째는 자연에 깃들어 사는 사람들이 만들어내는 문화적 풍경과 제국주의의 침탈과 저항에 대한 아픈 역사적 기억들이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to reveal the characteristics of the literary and aesthetic shape of Cho Hee-baek(趙熙百)'s literature works of Experience of marine transportation written in 1875. There are two main points in this paper. Firstly, it is to examine what differences occur in the process of Cho Hee-baek's same experience being embodied in different literary genres and what are the aesthetic characteristics of each. Secondly, it is what type of content hierarchy can be divided into in the works dealing with the entire process of crude experience and what is its meaning orientation. Cho Hee-baek documented the events objectively and precisely in the entire process of marine transportation without omission by scheduling through the marine transportation diary Eulhae-Johaengrok(乙亥漕行錄). The poems inserted in this diary captures the changes in the emotions of the landscape and the inner side when special events and unusually outstanding scenery are encountered. Throughout the entire journey, the Gasa(歌辭) Dohaega which contains the experience of Ganghwado Island, contains the exhausting shape of the experience in 120 lines of pure Korean language (Han-guel) using compressed shapes and fast rhythms. The meaning-oriented classification of works containing Cho Hee-baek's experience can be divided into four categories. Firstly, it is a faithful and factual record of the overall work prepared at the administrative level. Secondly, it is about the precariousness and internal tension experienced during the voyage. Thirdly, it embodies the beauty of the natural scenery seen during the voyage and the aesthetic consciousness for it. Lastly, it is the cultural landscape created by people living in nature and painful historical memories of the resistance to invasion of the imperialism.
