Abstract

Although dialogue journal writing has been effective ways to improve learners’writing skills, there have not been many studies in an EFL situation. This study was conducted to analyze the patterns of learners’ use of language functions and identify the most frequently used language functions based on the study of Staton, Shuy and Kreeft (1982). The findings of four subjects’ dialogue journal writing identified a variety of 14 language functions. The most frequent patterns of functional language use were in the order of giving opinions, asking teacher’s opinion, reporting personal experience, expressing personal wishes. In addition, new language function patterns such as expressing personal feelings, showing wishes or expectations, requesting, asking teacher’s personal opinion, thanking, asking agreement, suggesting have emerged in the interaction between a teacher through dialogue journal writing. Pedagogical implications are also discussed.
