This paper investigates how joking behaviors are related to the language socialization of college-level students in an ESL writing classroom. To explore the process of socialization through joking behaviors, the researcher examined the kinds of jokes made by the teacher, how the joking behavior functions in the classroom and how students respond to it. A college level writing English ESL class with 20 international students and one native-speaking teacher was observed. Approximately six hours of video-recorded interactional data, six sets of transcriptions and field notes were collected. Through analysis, three aspects of socialization through joking behaviors emerged: socialization into language use, socialization into cultural sense and socialization into the classroom discourse. Most notably, the research shows that classroom socialization through joking behaviors is a subtle and complex process, which not only helps students acquire linguistic competence but also helps them gain a sense of social and cultural competence of the language.
