Abstract
This study focuses on subversive aspects of women’s writing/storytelling in the two works by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale and Alias Grace, which may not be easily contained within the boundaries of male-dominant literary tradition. The former depicts a dystopian society, the latter blurs the boundaries between history and fiction. The silence of female voices especially from the working class paradoxically speaks loud of the existence of oppressive discourses which deprive women of means of language. Each female protagonist undermines or defies the existing order by voicing out her experiences and inner thoughts. This paper studies in what way their act of speech gives them empowerment and the sense of the subject ego. Both of them resist to be defined by the power discourse and thus remains as mystery and ultimate survivors. Their vulnerability under male gaze and marginality in the social order in turn ironically challenge the rigidity of the society and its values. Their equivocal and multi-layered signification in their writing/storytelling is like palimpsest and adds narrative uncertainty/unstability.
