Abstract

It is well known fact that translated literature played an important role in the history of modern Korean literature, and that the influence of acceptance and translation of Western literature was especially crucial to the formation of Korean modern literature. Kim Byung-chul, professor and translator of English literature, has gave his lifetime to the study of how Western literature has been introduced through the ‘mediators’ such as translators, literary critics and literary journals in th context of modern Korean literature. His works include the history of acceptance of Western literature and the history of translated literature during modern period of Korean literature. Examining how Western literary works were accepted in the colonial period, in other words studying how they were translated and introduced would be main focus of Kim Byung-chul’s works. This study of ‘importation’ and acceptance of Western literature played a crucial role in the initial phase of Korean comparative literature. Consequently, Korean comparative literature has limited its studies only in the function of the influence of European literature in relation to modern Korean literature. The final goal of this article would be to understand the aims of ‘acceptance study’, examine limits of ‘influence study’ and finally cast new lights on the research method of Korean comparative literature.
