이 글은 우리나라의 ‘연극자막’과 관련해 관객들이 겪는 불편함의 원인이 무엇인지를 밝히고, 그 원인들에 대한 이론적, 실제적 분석을 통해 문제해결의 방안을 모색하며, 나아가 이를 바탕으로 자막용 연극번역의 실천적 전략을 제안하기 위한 연구논문이다. 자막이 필요한 해외연극의 공연현장에서 자막이 그 기능을 제대로 발휘하지 못하는 원인은 장치, 기술, 번역의 세 가지 측면에서 모두 논의될 수 있으며, 이 중에서도 특히 오퍼레이팅과 관련된 기술적인 요인과 ‘연극적’ 요소와 공간적, 시간적 제약을 많이 받는 자막번역의 특성에서 비롯되는 여러 번역의 난제들과 더욱 밀접히 연결된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 자막용 연극번역 시 고려해야 할 여러 사항들을 연극 및 자막의 특질과 관련하여 논의한 후, 이를 바탕으로 관객의 불편함을 최소화하는 자막용 연극번역의 실천적 방안들을 제안하고자 한다. 보다 구체적으로, 자막용 연극번역 시 고려해야할 연극적 요소로는 ‘공연성,’ ‘현장성,’ ‘구어체적 문체’ 등의 문제를 논의하며, 자막의 특질과 관련해서는 ‘스파팅,’ ‘발화적 동시성,’ ‘축역’등의 문제에 대하여 살펴본다.
Abstract
This is a study of theatre translation, which deals with the surtitles and surtitling for foreign play performances in Korea: it discusses the theoretical issues related to the work of surtitling for play performance as well as its practical applications. In particular, by examining the problems the Korean audiences frequently encounter with the surtitles given to help their understanding, this study not only explores the causes and effects of those problems, but further searches for the ways to reduce the uncomfortableness the audiences feel because of the problems. For that purpose, the discussion is approached from three different points of related areas: translation, theatre, and subtitling. As it calls for a serious attention to the studies in theatre surtitles, the study then identifies the three principal factors of surtitling for play performance that affect its communicative functions, such as synchronization, readability, and spotting. Of these, spotting is the most important because it is the key technique which increases the effectiveness of synchronization and readability.
