Abstract
In order to understand book lending culture in the world properly, the case of England can not be overlooked. This paper aimed at introducing the history of commercial lending libraries and their effects on reading culture in Britain and tried to investigate their literary and social implication. The circulating library is a prototype of the public library. General readers except for a difference of whether book reading is free or not; for the circulating library usually payed annual subscription fee. Considerable amount of fine was charged for over-due, or lost and damaged books. The history of commercial libraries and consequent circulation of commercial books went back early before they fully developed and flourished during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The circulating libraries stocked their shelves with a wide range of books, including nonfiction, fiction, and children's books. In Korea, as in the case of the Britain, it is confirmed that the book lending business flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. In particular, the process of developing popular literature based on the increase of female readership and the reading of Korean novels through circulating library is common. The first book lending business in the Britain was Edinburgh in Scotland, where literacy and publishing culture developed thanks to public education in the early 18th century. Soon, however, commercial lending libraries spread to cities and provinces, including London, England. In the days of the Victorian dynasty, reading of book rental grew rapidly, centered on large cities and resort areas, due to the development of commerce and entertainment rather than political restrictions. Just like Korean novels, which women sought to enjoy for leisure purposes and cultivate in Korea, it was prevalent for Britain to borrow and read trilogy novels favored by female readers. It was cheaper to borrow than to buy books directly, and general readers were able to read various books. In the early 19th century there were over a thousand circulating libraries throughout the Britain, including the Minerva circulating library in the 19th century, the Mudie circulating library, the Smith circulating library, and the Boots circulating library in the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, these circulating libraries have been operated as a form of multi-purpose sales of various items as well as rental of books. There are a few book rental host who are also book publishers. In the case of the Mudie's circulating library, owners selected and lent trilogy novels in line with current ethics and interests. These circulating libraries were closed in the mid 20th century. The main reason was that the use of public libraries, which can borrow free of charge, became more common and the purchase of affordable books became easier. There were also many criticisms of the popular reading and female readers' novel reading activities. However, in recognition of the fact that the novel for book lending expresses the conflict between the realities of British women and the fantasy of women, it has been loved by many women readers and contributed greatly to the development of novels. Each country had different censorship and control over book lending, but circulating library fulfilled reading desire of the general public (including women and workers) and made it possible for ordinary readers to do so-called "self-indulgent" reading.
