A Critical Standpoint on False Extension of Comparative LiteratureChoon-hee KIM (Seoul National Univ.)The scholars of comparative literature are expected to establish a redefined methodology in the age of multi-cultural age. This study responds to the urgency of methodological perspective to be recontextualized under the current circumstances of a "cultural studies boom" of international dimensions. This study shows a sequence of steps necessary to compare essays used in this study. The first step is a short survey of a study on Henry James's The Tragic Muse. The second step is to compare two critical works: one is the study of Henry James's The Tragic Muse and the other, as an example of comparative analysis, a comparative study of The Tragic Muse and Zola's Nana. This analysis functions as method and approach to the next step. The third step is to analyze a study on Henry James and Machado de Assis in the framework of "inter-American literature". This study reveals, in the most comprehensive way, how the analysis to compare Henry James and Machado de Assis in the framework of "inter-American literature" falls into a critical fallacy, and results in its 'false extension' in comparative analysis. The act of redefining comparative literature to reestablish the value of the past and present for the future needed to look at differences and conflicts between comparative literature and cultural studies leading to the intersection of the two.
