It should be emphasised that Kim Si-sŭp did not only turn in his search for historical precedents to Chinese history, as was the standard practice of the Chinese and Korean literati. Kim Si-sŭp also chose episodes in Korean history which facilitated his critique of his society and his theoretical musings about statecraft. His interest in selecting events and personalities from his native history may have been inspired by the intense historical research and publication activities which were being undertaken at the time.
