Abstract

This paper tries to read the carnivalesque elements in William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew during the Renaissance. The Renaissance is a direct “carnivalization of human consciousness, philosophy and literature.” Carnival was “feast of time , the feast of becoming, change, and renewal” and celebrated temporary liberation from all hierarchical precedence, Carnival belongs to entirely different sphere of the borderline between art and life. Carnival forms are different from all religious dogmatism during the carnival time. Everyone participates and lives in it under the law of carnival, the laws of its own freedom, the complete exit from the present order of their lives. Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew is full of carnivalesque elements; “crownings and uncrownings”, “images of the material bodily lower stratum”, of “ambivalent obscenities”, of parody , and of popular banquet scenes. These carnivalesque aspects show Shakespeare’s world consciousness and keen insight of radical changes. The images of the material bodily stratum is associated with the principle of grotesque realism. The principle of the grotesque realism is “the lowering of all that is high, spiritual, ideal, abstract.” The grotesque image reflects a phenomenon in transformation, “an as yet unfinished metamorphosis, of death and birth, growth and becoming.” Shakespeare’s grotesque image is the same with Bakhtin’s that is the ambivalent poles of transformation, the old and the new.
