Abstract

The Spirit of A Gentleman[Sunbi] Reflected upon Yoenam's novels, Yangban-Jeon(An Aristocrat's Tale) and Ye-Duk Sunsaeng-Jeon (Decorum-Virtue's Tale)Chung, Yo-IlThis thesis is to speculate the Spirit of a Gentleman[Sunbi] reflected upon Chinese Character-novels, Yangban-Jeon(An Aristocrat's Tale) and Ye-Duk Sunsaeng-Jeon(Decorum- Virtue's Tale) of Yoenam, Park Ji-won (1737~1805), the scholar of practical science and writer in late Cho-son. In this manuscript, I took the methodology to understand the meaning implied behind the contents of the works. Among Yoenam's novels, while Yangban-Jeon attempts to restore the spirit of the gentlemen[Sunbi] and to state the moral principle as a whole, Ye-Duk Sunsaeng-Jeon speaks about tao of friendship, one of the moral principles.Yangban-Jeon reveals the author's ardent wish to live, according to one's own status, the life of integrity, to recover gentleman's true quality that enlighten the world by carrying out humanity and justice. Then Ye-Duk Sunsaeng-Jeon shows the spirit of gentleman[Sunbi] evaluates man not with his social status but with the honest attitude toward life; as shown in the case of Um Hyang-soo, the hero, this work values diligent and honourable mind that man should do by one's own ability regardless of his social rank, as well as proposing the true meaning of friendship.True gentleman or a man of virtue[Kunja] does realize his aspiration to live truthfully in spite of his unfavorable circumstances. It is the author's true intention to create Yangban-Jeon and Ye-Duk Sunsaeng-Jeon: to recover, on this earth, the spirit of gentleman[Sunbi] and the attitude of virtuous man[Kunja] who performs human duties, by disciplining oneself, and eventually enlightens the world.
