Abstract

The purpose of this article is to reveal the 'shadow of the Soviet' in Benjamin's thought of the 1930., elucidating historical origins, context, and theoretical implications of Sergei Tretyakov's model of “operative writer,” cited in Walter Benjamin's famous essay "The writer as a producer." Soviet Factography, a representative artistic project in the transitional period of Soviet avant-garde (1927-1932), which could be delivered to German intellectual group of Weimar Republic through Tretyakov’s visiting lecture in Berlin 1931, was the first historical and theoretical attempt to modernize writing, to reconceive it as a technology of advanced industrial modernity at the threshold of mass-media society where a large-scale industrialization and media revolution occurred at the same time. In this respect, it is also marked by some original characteristics concerning the body of thoughts, which will later constitutes allegedly typical Benjaminian problematics of media: information, technique, and mass. Before the well-known influence from Brecht, ‘the shadow of the Soviet’ had been already shaped in Benjamin's thought when he traveled to Moscow in 1926-1927, and left its trace in all of his later works, becoming a special kind of ‘Moscow lens.’ Theoretical hypothesis of this article, articulated as “Soviet factography, read by Benjamin” demonstrates that at least since 1927 Benjamin wore this special ‘lens’ which allows him to “see Berlin through Moscow.”
