초록
This article proposes to revisit the several occurrences of the myth of Leda and the Swan in the poetic tradition, starting from Ronsard’s “La Défloration de Lède” to Yeats’ famous sonnet, all the way to Fiona Benson’s rendition of the myth in her 2019 book of poetry Vertigo and the Ghost. The story of Leda as told by Appolodorus and then by Ovid is about the rape of King Tyndareus’ wife by Zeus, who has taken the form of a swan. The imagery of the elegant swan twirling around the naked Leda’s body has always inspired painters and artists from the Greek and Roman period to the Renaissance. In Poetry though, a stress is put on the idea of the contact with divinity along with the violence of the act performed by the swan. The connotation given to the image of the swan changes through times, as does the leniency towards the very act of rape. An interesting contrast emerges from the elegant swan and the brutality attached to the act of raping. This article aims at observing how different poets used this contrast to deliver a message that put into light different interpretations of the act of raping in literature.
