Abstract
In this paper, Sylvia Plath (1932-1963)’s novel “The Bell Jar” (1963) was interpreted as a bildungsroman from the female perspective. In coming-of-age novels, the experience of a metropolitan city is a rite of passage where a protagonist challenges oneself and overcomes the difficulties that arise. However, in “The Bell Jar,” a female protagonist’s trip to New York ended with exhausting experiences without any adventures or achievements. This paper observed the frustration and feeling of failure of that protagonist as it related to a society where young women were welcomed only as “ladies”. Specifically, this paper points out that the term “lady,” which was generally used to refer to an adult woman, was problematic. It reflects the heterosexual-patriarchal society during the postwar period in the U.S.A, which shows that women were not considered as subjects of growth, but as guardians of the family and were fantasized as “housewives”. The struggles of the female protagonist had experienced as a lady, which limited her ability to grow up, show that even the act of physically running away from home or college did not provide an escape from the gender-oriented interpellation. It also noted that the only way to be free from the ideal lady model was when Esther became a woman in a public scandal. This implies a dilemma where women can only hope to develop unique characters by taking the risks of being alienated from central society. Through exploring “The Bell Jar,” this paper attempted to reveal that the story of women’s growth is a battle with a society where women are not considered subjects of growth. This paper finds meaning in showing the relationship between the challenges women experience in the process of growing up and the conflict between gender norms.
