Abstract

Don DeLillo’s 1985 postmodern satirical novel and disaster narrative, White Noise, portrays the quotidian life of the Midwestern college town of Blacksmith. The protagonist and narrator, Jack Gladney, serves as the chairman of the Hitler Studies program at College-on-the-Hill and is an authoritative researcher in the field. However, he harbors a profound anxiety that he cannot even share with his wife: a paralyzing fear of death. In his quest to overcome this dread, he engages in various strategies, including hiding behind the authority and charisma of Hitler, as well as objectifying and aestheticizing death and disaster in an attempt to establish a psychological and aesthetic distance from mortality. Among these strategies, the greatest source of comfort and stability for him is found in supermarkets and shopping. Within the supermarket, he regains his lost self-esteem and experiences a sense of self-expansion through the act of shopping. This paper posits that the spaces of supermarkets and shopping represent a realm of postmodern bio-politics, analyzing them through the lens of the new spatial logic defined by Rem Koolhaas as “junkspace.” Constructed through the fluid capital of late capitalism and the logic of consumerism, junkspace transforms the entirety of architectural and urban environments into spaces akin to shopping malls, enticing individuals into a perpetual cycle of consumption. Such spaces, akin to those analyzed by Fredric Jameson in his examination of postmodernity, deprive individuals of the ability to situate themselves within the world and to map their own existence. In essence, the space itself transcends the individual’s geographical cognitive abilities. Within these environments, individuals lose even their political representational capacities, becoming solely engrossed in shopping, with little else to occupy their time. This paper characterizes such spaces, which compel consumption, as “concentration consumption camp” and seeks to understand this phenomenon as a colossal disaster, exploring potential pathways for overcoming this predicament through Jameson’s postmodern aesthetic politics.
