Abstract

The centenary of the birth of Paul Celan, one of the most significant postwar German-language poets, was commemorated in 2020 with the first-ever publication of his complete works in Korean. The translator, Heo Su-gyeong, a celebrated Korean poet who had spent nearly half her life in Germany, passed away in 2018 and so did not live to see the publication of this collection. Both Celan and Heo, as poets and translators shaped by diasporic experiences, exhibit profound resonances in their literary worlds, offering rich intercultural and intertextual possibilities. This paper is the first study to explore the emerging literary dialogue betweeen Celan and Heo, with a focus on the motif of light in Heo’s translations of Celan’s poetry. Their extensive ‘collaboration’ over several decades, bridging the West and East through language, can be effectively illuminated using Celan’s concept of Lichtschliff(the use of light when polishing and/or the polishing of light itself). This paper does so by examining four key terms related to light in Heo’s translations: 1) ‘-빛’[bit](light), distinct from ‘-색’[saek](color); 2) “빛의 압박”[bit-ui abbak](Pressure of Light): ‘스스로 빛나는 포탄 들’[seuseuro bitnaneun potandeul](self-radiant bombshells); 3) ‘머리 칼’[meorikal](hair) and/or ‘머리-칼’[meori-kal](head-knife); and 4) ‘빛줄기’[bitjulgi](light-stem). This study aims to reveal how the waves of light permeate Celan’s poetic vision subtly resonate and diffuse within the Korean language through Heo’s translations, enriching poetry’s intercultural landscape.
