Abstract
This study presents a comparative re-reading of Shen Congwen’s “Life (生)” and “The Doctor (醫生)” alongside Anton Chekhov’s “Misery” and Ivan Turgenev’s “The District Doctor,” through the frameworks of Deleuze and Guattari’s affect theory and schizoanalysis. Shen Congwen, a key figure in the generation following the New Literature period when Russian literature was actively translated in China, is known to have drawn substantial influence from Chekhov and Turgenev. Yet detailed comparative analyses of their works remain sparse. This paper addresses that gap by exploring “Misery” and “Life” through affect theory, and “The District Doctor” and “The Doctor” through the framework of serialized events and schizoanalytic fragmentation. In “Misery,” the body emerges as a surface of affective intensities, embodied by Iona, who becomes a conductor of non-verbal lament and ambient grief. In “Life,” affective forces unfold through a puppet-like performance, enabling an active reconfiguration of trauma and death. In both “The Doctor” and “The District Doctor,” the body is presented as a pure simulacrum without origin, shaped by fractured subjectivity and serialized experiences. Through these readings, this study argues that Shen Congwen not only internalized and the figuration of affect and schizoanalytic narrative strategies of Chekhov and Turgenev, but also actively expanded their literary achievements into a distinct experimental idiom. In doing so, Shen’s fiction transcends the narrow label of “regional literature,” inviting a renewed understanding of his work in dialogue with modernist Russian literature. This comparative perspective also offers a critical supplementation to existing interpretive paradigms surrounding Chekhov and Turgenev.
