Abstract
This study examines Matsumoto Seicho’s detective novel Zero no Shoten (1959) in relation to the discourse of “panpan” women in postwar Japan and its political implications. From the immediate aftermath of defeat through the 1950s, panpan were represented across popular songs, films, and confessional memoirs as both victims and betrayers, embodying an ambivalent cultural image. While engaging with these contemporary discourses, Matsumoto deliberately excluded corporeal descriptions, instead foregrounding social contexts and gendered power relations to construct his narrative. Focusing on the contrasts among Hisako as the emblem of victimhood, Sachiko as the figure of betrayal, and Teiko as the embodiment of the emerging middle-class woman, this paper analyzes how Zero no Shoten reflects the postwar reconfiguration of gender and class order as well as the reception of Americanism in Japan. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that the figure of the panpan should not be reduced to a mere symbol of victimization or moral corruption, but rather understood as a political allegory mediating the memory of the Occupation and the restructuring of gender relations in postwar Japanese society.
