초록
This paper explores anxiety, fear, hostility and hospitality in Defoe’s A Journal of the Plague Year. It first looks at people’s anxiety and fear of the plague that imperceptibly infects people, focusing on the shutting up of victims’ houses and the mass burials of dead victims. Then it examines the entanglement of hostility and hospitality. People’s anxiety and fear force them to turn against strangers. Their hostility can be called “passive” in that they are obliged to be hostile by the anxious concern for self-preservation. Hospitality seems impossible because it may amount to a fatal act of inviting the plague and death. Moreover, the entanglement of hostility and hospitality cannot be resolved because everybody’s self-preservation is just as important as everybody else’s. In the last part, this paper addresses the issue of burial and mourning. Dead victims are literally dumped into burial pits promiscuously. They are objects of disposal, not of mourning. Even worse, they are dug up again when their burying grounds are hastily converted into other uses. It is people’s passive hostility and inability to mourn that makes the plague year one of the most tragic times.
