Abstract
This study examined the relationship between “humans and animals” from a cultural perspective, taking Ainu bear rituals and related mythology as the research subject. Ainu bear rituals and mythology have structural homology, which has many implications for studying the relationships between ritual and myth and between humans and nature from an ecological philosophy perspective. However, the extant in-depth research is insufficient to meet the need for such research. Accordingly, this study first examined the ritualistic and mythological meanings expressed via Ainu bear rituals and mythological materials and then examined those meanings’ implications in the relationship between “humans (Ainu) and animals (bears).” Finally, this study analyzed the myth-philosophical implications of that relationship. The results showed that, first, in Ainu society, bears were recognized as animals with personality elements perceived as sufficiently excellent to justify the bears’ admission to the Ainu human family system (i.e., extending the category of family to the natural world), and humans and bears were conceived of as sharing mutual equality and respect; second, humans and bears formed an exchange and circulation relationship based on that mutual equality and respect; and third, the ritual (Iomante), which is an act of human collective expression of opinion, combined with words spoken by the gods themselves, supports this relationship’s binding force. Finally, this study identified myth-philosophical implication that humans and nature can only coexist when this ritualistic and mythological system is well maintained.
