초록
This paper examines how Henry Colburn, through his marketing and advertising, contributed greatly to the rise of the Silver Fork novels. Silver Fork fiction emerged as a mixture of sociopolitical criticism and itemized accounts of aristocratic life. Colburn found that such detailed information about the aristocracy in Silver Fork texts was extremely appealing to middle class readers. Minimizing or erasing the messages about sociopolitical reform in the texts, he transfigured Silver Fork fiction into a manual for the emulation of the aristocracy by the middle class. This paper aims to open a new perspective on Colburn. He has been regarded as a disturber of the literary ecosystem by devaluing literary works and turning them into commodities. This paper argues that Colburn could be repositioned as a forerunner of the cultural industry who transformed novels into planned products.
