초록
The paper intends to contribute to (re)writing the balanced history of the books by rediscovering and reappraising the indispensable roles of publishers, who had often been ignored and underestimated by most historians. Focusing on a case of Victorian Age in Great Britain, the article consists of three major arguments:1) to understand the thesis of D. F. Mckenzie who insists to transform the conventional analytical bibliography into historical bibliography, which redefines bibliography as the study of the sociology of texts; 2) to keep trace of historical backgrounds for the mass production of modern type of a cheap book, the emergence of reading public, and commercialization /specialization of publishing companies; 3) to evaluate the origins and the process of separate professional identity of publishers who matured from commercial matchmakers to independent literary agents. The author concludes the article by encouraging publishers in Korea to learn from Western experiences and thus inviting them to narrate their own stories involved in book-making business.
