본 연구는 쉐도잉 학습법을 이용한 리듬 교육이 고등학교 1학년 영어 학습자의리듬 향상에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 쉐도잉 학습과 듣고 따라 하기학습을 통해 리듬 수업을 받을 학생들의 발화를 녹음하여 음절의 변이 지수를 구해 리듬의 변이 지수가 향상되었는지 분석하였다. 원어민들의 청취 평가 점수를통해 주관적인 리듬의 향상 정도도 평가하였다. 음성적인 분석을 통한 음절의 변이 지수와 주관적인 리듬 평가 점수는 어떤 상관관계를 보이는지도 분석하였다. 분석 결과 쉐도잉 학습과 듣고 따라 하기 학습을 받은 두 집단 모두 음절 변이 지수와 청취 평가 점수에서 향상된 성과를 보였으며, 효과 크기 면에서는 쉐도잉 학습을 받은 집단이 다소 더 큰 효과 크기를 보였다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 쉐도잉학습법이 한국인 영어 학습자의 리듬 향상에 긍정적인 효과를 미친다는 점을 증명하였다. 또 음절의 변이 지수가 청취 평가와 상관관계가 크다는 사실을 밝힘으로써 음절의 변이 지수가 리듬을 평가할 수 있는 신뢰성 있는 도구가 될 수 있다는 점을 보여주었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of shadowing activitieson the improvement of Korean high school students’ English rhythm. Inorder to investigate the effects of shadowing activities on the Englishrhythm, students were grouped into a shadowing activity group and a listen& repeat activity group. Variability indices of syllables were acousticallymeasured to calculate the rhythm of the students while two native speakersof English participated in evaluating perceived English rhythm of thestudents. The results show that shadowing activities as well as listen &repeat activities could have positive effects on improving Korean highschool students’ English rhythm, while shadowing activities showed alarger effect size than listen & repeat activities. It is meaningful that thisstudy carried out an objective rhythmic calculation of utterances usingacoustic measurements as well as perceptual evaluation of native speakers’. These objective and subjective evaluations of English rhythm could makethe results of this study more reliable. The results of this study impliesthat high school English teachers could help their students activelyparticipate in pronunciation activities and improve their English rhythmusing shadowing activities appropriately.
