초록

This study explores the distinctive yet interrelated writing styles of the Brontë sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—through the lens of stylometry, a quantitative method for analyzing literary style. Using a corpus of 100 nineteenth-century British novels, including the sisters’ seven major works, the research employs techniques such as cluster analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), the GI method, and the Zeta test to uncover patterns of authorial style. The results reveal that, despite thematic and narrative differences among their works, the Brontë sisters exhibit statistically significant stylistic similarities, forming a robust cluster separate from their contemporaries such as Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Elizabeth Gaskell. While each sister possesses a unique literary voice, their shared upbringing, collaborative childhood writings, and mutual influence contribute to a pronounced family resemblance in stylistic traits. This study highlights how features such as lexical density, function word frequency, and n-gram patterns can quantitatively capture elements of literary identity. By integrating digital humanities tools with traditional literary criticism, this research not only sheds new light on the Brontës’ collective authorship but also exemplifies how computational methods can deepen our understanding of literary style, authorship, and creative legacy.

Abstract

This study explores the distinctive yet interrelated writing styles of the Brontë sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—through the lens of stylometry, a quantitative method for analyzing literary style.
